Where can I plug my device? What should I bring (converter? adapter?)

CONVERTERS / TRANSFORMERS

*** FIRST, check if you device is DUAL-VOLTAGE.***
Many modern devices are, especially electronics. If it's the case then it will be marked 100-240V or 110-240V on it.

  • If your device is dual-voltage: No voltage-converter needed
  • If your device is NOT dual-voltage and works only on 110-120 Volts:
For high-power devices (hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, etc.): You need to bring a Voltage-Converter suitable for high-watt devices if you are staying in a hotel that provide 220 Volts (see list above). Note that even if there is a dual-voltage (110V or 220V) outlet in the batchroom (like at Memories Cayo Largo and Grand Memories Cayo Largo), you cannot plug a high-power device in it, it's a "Shavers-Only" outlet for low-watt devices. You'll have to use the bedroom outlets with a voltage-converter.
For electronic devices: You need to bring a Transformer (voltage-converter for low-watt devices) if you are staying in a hotel that provide 220 Volts only (see list above). But some hotels have a dual-voltage outlet in the bathroom, if it's the case, then you can plug your electronics there, no transformer needed.
  • If your device is not dual-voltage and works only on 220-240 Volts:
You'll need a converter or transformer if you are staying in a hotel that provide only 110 Volts (see list above).

Many converters operate as both a converter for high-watt electrical devices and a transformer for low-watt electronic devices; they are the most convenient if you often travel with both electronic devices and high-draw appliances that generate heat.

ADAPTERS

Do not confuse adapters and converters, an adapter do not convert voltage; it simply allows an electrical device from one country to be physically plugged into the electrical outlets of another country. The hotel's electrical outlets were cleverly designed so they usually take both flat-prongs plugs (North American-style) and round-prongs plugs (aka Europlug). But an adapter may still be required depending on which country you're coming from (like UK, etc.), or if you device has a polarised plug (one prong larger than the other) or a grounding pin. The pictures of each outlet found in Cayo Largo hotels (top of this page) show you the type of plugs that are compatible.

Here's a quick guide based on plug type (click thumbnails to see a larger image):

Type A plug If your appliance has a Type A plug
No adapter needed, OK for all hotels

Type B plug If your appliance has a Type B plug
Adapter is needed, most hotel don't have a type B outlet (with ground hole)

Type C plug If your appliance has a Type C plug (europlug)
No adapter needed, OK for all hotels

Type E plug If your appliance has a Type E plug
No adapter needed, can fit in a type C outlet but won't be grounded

Type F plug If your appliance has a Type F plug
No adapter needed, can fit in a type C outlet but won't be grounded

Type L plug If your appliance has a Type L plug
Adapter may be needed, not every hotel has a type L socket (with ground hole)

If your electric device has a plug different from the 6 above, then for sure you'll need an adapter.

Here are some examples based on country of origin:

No adapter is usually needed for travelers from:

Canada, USA, Mexico, France, Spain, Italy (if type C or F plug), Germany, Netherlands, Argentina (if type C plug), Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Chile (if type C plug), Panama, Brazil (if type C plug)

Adapter needed for travelers from:

United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Italy (if type L plug), Argentina (if type I plug), Chile (if type L plug), Brazil (if type N plug), Hong Kong
