La Yana Tree (Arbol La Yana)
La Yana (aka La Llana) is an ancient tree reputed to be over 500 years old. It is certainly the oldest living being in Cayo Largo, and perhaps it was already on the island to welcome the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492! Legend has it that pirates used the tree as a landmark to hide their treasures. But in our opinion, the island itself is the hidden treasure! :-)
This huge tree with intertwined trunk and branches is located near the sandy path leading to the western beaches, about 2.4 km from the beginning of the trail (intersection with the main paved road). A sign indicates where to turn, the tree is then a few meters. You can see its location on our Map of Cayo Largo.
Although it is not a “world-class” tourist attraction, it still is impressive, especially if the tree is as old as they say. Tourists and locals often leave little offerings on the trunk and branches of this patriarch for good luck. It is said that “Santeria” ceremonies are sometimes celebrated under this so-called mythical tree.
Watch our video (Dec. 2018) of a trip to the west end of the island on an ATV, you'll see the road sign and access path to the Yana Tree at 1:22 minute.
